Laurinburg is the County Seat of Scotland County, and is named due to the settlement by the Scottish Highlanders back in the 1700’s. It is this strong Scottish heritage which helps give Laurinburg its distinctive culture. Appreciation of our Scottish heritage can be seen everywhere, as in the naming of our establishments such as Scotia Village, our highly desirable retirement community, St. Andrew's Presbyterian College, our supurb four-year liberal arts college, Scotland Memorial Hospital, our progressive hospital system or the Fighting Scots, our State Champion baseball team.
Laurinburg also contributes to African American history. Sherman’s troops passed through Scotland County and several memorials to his march are present in Scotland County.
